France’s expulsion and deportation of a 15-year-old Roma girl to Kosovo, along with her parents and siblings, set off protests at 14 high schools in Paris. Thousands of students rose up Thursday in anger after the high-profile eviction of Leonarda Dibrani. Her deportation, as well as that of Khatchik Kachatryan, a 19-year-old student, to Armenia, have raised questions over French immigration policies. Further angering protesters was what has been described as inhumane treatment of the teenager, who had lived in the country illegally for four years. She was detained during a school trip and forced to get off a bus in front of her classmates.
