Yahoo News has hired Matt Bai, former chief political correspondent for the New York Times Magazine, as national political columnist. In his new role, Bai will offer unique commentary and deep analysis of politics in Washington and around the country.
“Matt Bai is one of the best political journalists in the industry and will bring a strong, widely respected voice to Yahoo News,” said Robertson Barrett VP of Yahoo News and Finance.
Bai covered the last three presidential campaigns at the New York Times Magazine, which he joined in 2002. His work is known to connect politics to larger trends in technology, society and pop culture, and his writing often centers on themes of generational change.
“Matt has an ideal voice for Yahoo News,” said Megan Liberman, editor in chief of Yahoo News. “He has a singular ability to write about politics in a way that will connect with Yahoo News’ broad readership and bring in younger readers who aren’t always attracted to political commentary. I’m thrilled he is joining us.”
Bai’s second book, tentatively titled “All the Truth Is Out: The Fall of Gary Hart and the Rise of Tabloid Journalism,” will be published by Alfred A. Knopf in the fall of 2014. He is also the author of “The Argument: Inside the Battle to Remake Democratic Politics,” a New York Times Notable Book for 2007.
His “Political Times” column has appeared in the paper and online since 2010. His work has twice been honored in The Best American Political Writing. He has appeared frequently on such programs as “Meet the Press” and “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” and in several “Frontline” documentaries on PBS. He is expected to be a major presence for Yahoo News across all media platforms.
Bai is the latest in a series of high profile new hires for Yahoo News, as it continues to build a team of original and well-known editorial voices. He will be based in the DC bureau and report to Liberman.
